The benefit of electric cars, in customers’ hands

While logic points toward electric cars being the future, they still lag in sales compared to traditionally powered vehicles. How can we help consumers see that electric cars are the way forward? One answer is ‘The Plug or the Pump’, an innovative customisable app by Designit.

How it works

The app helps the average person become more aware of the benefits of using an electric vehicle (EV) by communicating to users the cost of driving one in terms of energy, CO2 and money. In essence, it helps them compare their gasoline powered journeys to what it would really feel like (and cost) to own an electrical vehicle before making the decision to switch over. Each journey’s summary is then saved, and over time, the statistics can provide an idea of the benefits in terms of money and the environmental impact.

For example, the data can be analysed at the car dealership together with a salesperson to determine if an EV is the right choice for a consumer or not. Our research showed that electric cars’ somewhat limited range and speed puts people off, when in reality, their driving routines fit perfectly within these limits. The stubborn dogma of car purchases including off-road capabilities, the need to be able to drive at 100mph, or immense towing capacity has become so deeply set in the consumers’ minds, that even city dwellers look for these features in their cars.

Bridging the gap between being curious and being convinced

Designit’s The Plug or the Pump app, which can be uniquely designed to represent a company or car brand, challenges consumer’s resistance to the economics of driving electric vehicles by demonstrating exactly how one would benefit from owning an electric car, in terms of energy, CO2 and money. It literally bridges the gap to turn the curious consumer into the convinced consumer.
