Designit has teamed with Ambu - a leading developer of diagnostic and life-supporting healthcare devices - to understand emergency and intensive care in Indian hospitals.
The Designit team has set out to understand this fragile context with all its nuances exploring how it is delivered in hospitals across various economic strata, with particular focus on the public healthcare system which is accessed by millions of Indians.
The insights have led the teams to question notions and practices in healthcare long considered industry standards, but not necessarily practiced in India.
The Indian healthcare system presents a paradox of very highly educated doctors in world class hospitals against the rural and semi urban India with poor access to healthcare. These present a plethora of non standard practices where new product strategies have to be developed specifically to local market needs. The team also came up with recommendations on transforming the product design process to better address the needs of low-income healthcare markets.
The challenges for Designit now are many: innovating products and services within the stiff parameters of affordability, dealing with the local risks of reuse of disposable device and infections, and creating platforms for education and awareness among doctors and hospitals among others.
The project is also facilitated in collaboration with Delft University of Technology and professor P.V. Kandachar.
