iPhone UI on your Windows mobile?

Flick Software research is about to release a beta version of their iSwish software.

So now Windows Mobile users can have the iPhone interface on their devices. If it works, it’s super cool – but as with many things where Windows tries to replicate Apple UI, it just isn’t as good as it sounds. And hey Apple fans – remember that imitation is the greatest kind of flatter…

Raising money with… cock-a-doodle

cock-a-doodle

A bit untraditional and just a tad “over the edge”, but to me it’s still a very funny concept on how to use interactive web applications to raise money for a good cause – in this case to cross out male cancer…

Breakthrough in weather forecasting?

If you’re looking for a reliable weather forecast, here you are. It needs some product development in terms of long range forecasts, but thumbs up for Gary’s cool invention:)

Commercials & Interactive Displays

interactive display

As described on engadget, Monster Media has created several innovative kinds of interactive / ambient displays that extend our perception of commercial in the urban/public space by directly engaging the user/consumer in the commercial.

With this approach a completely new path for innovative commercials has been paved.

Engadget describes it this way: “we’ve most certainly seen window-based advertising used to lure the untrained eye to any manner of wares, but Scion‘s latest iteration certainly takes interactive promoting to new heights. In order to market its limited edition tC Release Series 4.0, it partnered up with InWindow to cover a series of street-side windows with bubbles which reacted to movements made by captivated individuals walking by. Granted, the installation isn’t nearly as addictive as say, trying to wrangle up every single Pokémon, but it definitely managed to hold the attention of a few geeked-out civilians. Check it out for yourself, the video’s right after the jump.

Do check out the video demos on the Monster Media website.. You-ll find some amazing stuff there…

Can you open it?

midlertidigt-lag-001.jpgI experienced a new temporary screw cap for the first time last week, and I wasn’t impressed. Then yesterday I saw an article in a Danish newspaper that showed that I wasn’t the only one that was pulling their hair out at the new design.

“Can you open it?” read the headline. The article describes how Arla has been forced to change the screw top on their milk cartons following increasing pressure from unsatisfied customers. But the new design, created by Tetra-Pak, has prompted even more complaints than the first. Now the newspaper has created an online vote for the worst packaging.

This is one example of tricky packaging. People are tired of it. Companies have the chance to solve many of these everyday problems through design – and make money in the process. Instead, they opt for quick-fixes that may be cheap but leave the customer frustrated and prompts them to switch to another brand.

Just think what life could be like if companies invested more resources into reinventing packaging as a concept. Be visionary and capitalise on the strategic dimension in ‘packaging usability’. It’s just a small thing but you can be sure it’s got huge commercial potential.

The next big thing in urban commuting?

BigDog2

If you’re fed up with your Hummer, Segway, monowheel, fixie, wakeboard or whatever your means of commuting you prefer – switch to BigDog. This beast beats ‘em all. It hit the news this week because of the attention it’s attracting on YouTube. Watch the video and you’ll see why.

The US military has invested millions in creating this robot with characteristics of people, dogs and horses. Although it’s designed to help troops transport heavy loads in tough terrain, the general public is expected to be able to buy it soon.

Could this be the next trend in commuting? It’ll guarantee you an extraordinary ride to work. And it’s a breakthrough in parking, driving your kids around and getting your shopping bags home. Amazing work from Big Dog’s designers at Boston Dynamics. I think it’s got potential…even if it looks a bit odd!

LG’s next Black Label handset

lg-black-label1_w606.jpg

LG is launching yet another phone that attacks our senses. I liked the Chocolate and loved the shine – design wise anyway.

Now they are launching their next Black Label handset and it looks stylish with its carbon fibre and tempered glass styling – and of course touch screen control . Furthermore LG promises that it will be the slimmest 5 megapixel camera phone on the market. This means it has to be thinner than the 14.9mm thin Samsung G600.

I can’t wait to see it in real….

Well-intentioned, but missing the point!

justthat1.jpgI saw this on the way to work this morning in central Copenhagen. It’s well-intentioned service design but it simply doesn’t work! Ironically the green recycling bin doesn’t solve the problem; it’s just a quick fix.

Instead, lets adapt solutions to human behaviour. If we apply persuasive design that encourages people to act in a more sustainable way – not to dump their newspaper in the recycling bin after a two-minute read but to leave it in a designated pile for reuse – we will achieve much more. After all, reusing is more sustainable than recycling.

How’s that for morning philosophy!
